It began as a spontaneous food fight during a local parade, where tomatoes were accidentally knocked over and then hurled by the crowd in a burst of playful chaos. By the 1950s, official recognition was granted, allowing La Tomatina to grow in popularity. Today, it is celebrated globally, with tens of thousands of participants arriving each year to engage in the hour-long battle. More than 100 tons of tomatoes are delivered to the town square, ensuring that Buñol is drenched in red by the event’s end.
