Dwayne Johnson was born on May 2, 1972, in Hayward, California, to Mataniufeagaimaleata “Ata” Fitisemanu Maivia and former professional wrestler Rocky Johnson. As a child, he spent some time living in Auckland, New Zealand, with his mother’s family. While there, he attended Richmond Road Primary School and played rugby before eventually moving back to the U.S.

Dwayne Johnson was born to a diverse family, with his father, Rocky Johnson, being a Black Nova Scotian and his mother, Ata Maivia, of Samoan descent. Wrestling runs deep in his family. His father made history as one of WWE’s first Black tag team champions, while his grandfather, Peter Maivia, was a wrestling legend. Early career (1996):

After being cut by the Calgary Stampeders, Dwayne Johnson shifted gears and began his professional wrestling career in 1996. Initially wrestling under his real name, he won a match against The Brooklyn Brawler but lost to Chris Candido and Owen Hart.

Intercontinental Champion (1996–1997):

Dwayne Johnson made his WWF debut as Rocky Maivia, a name that combined his father and grandfather’s ring names. Although he was hesitant to use it, Vince McMahon and Jim Ross convinced him. He was promoted as the WWF’s first third-generation wrestler and earned the nickname “The Blue Chipper.” Despite being inexperienced, Johnson was heavily pushed from the start. He debuted on Monday Night Raw on November 4, 1996, and had his first match at Survivor Series on November 17, where he was the sole survivor in an eight-man elimination tag match.

On February 13, 1997, Johnson won the Intercontinental Championship from Hunter Hearst Helmsley and successfully defended it in the months that followed, including his first WrestleMania victory at WrestleMania 13.
