Will Smith Early life:

Will Smith was born on September 25, 1968, at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in West Philadelphia. His parents, Willard Carroll Smith Sr., an Air Force veteran and refrigeration engineer, and Caroline, a school board administrator, raised him in the Baptist faith in the Wynnefield neighborhood. His mother had graduated from Carnegie Mellon University.

Smith grew up with an older sister, Pamela, and younger twin siblings, Harry and Ellen. He attended a parochial school before moving on to Overbrook High School. When he was 13, his parents separated, finalizing their divorce in 2000.

At 12, Smith began rapping. However, when his grandmother discovered curse words in his lyrics, she left him a note, urging him to rap with more meaning. This moment he influenced his decision to avoid using profanity in his music.

Will Smith Career Journey:

1985–1992: Rise of DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince:

Will Smith first ventured into music in 1985 as a rapper, calling himself the Fresh Prince, alongside his friend Jeffrey “DJ Jazzy Jeff” Townes. They met at a house party where Smith stepped in as a hype man. Their chemistry was undeniable, leading them to form a duo. Shortly after, they added Clarence Holmes (Ready Rock C) as their beatboxer and released their first single, “Girls Ain’t Nothing but Trouble” in 1986.

The group gained significant attention with their 1987 debut album, Rock the House. In 1989, they won the first Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance with “Parents Just Don’t Understand.” However, it was their 1991 hit “Summertime” that truly propelled them to fame, earning another Grammy and reaching number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Despite Smith’s later solo success, he has remained close friends with Townes.

In the early ’90s, Smith faced financial trouble after overspending and neglecting his taxes. With only $2,800 in his pocket, he was hit with a $2.8 million tax bill from the IRS, who garnished his income. Fortunately, in 1990, NBC gave him a lifeline by creating The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, which kickstarted his acting career. Around this time, Smith also faced legal trouble due to an alleged assault, but he was not convicted.

1993–1997: Transition to Solo Music and Film Success:

Smith began an incredible journey with principal acting in Six Degrees of Separation (1993) and in Bad Boys (1995), where he worked with Martin Lawrence. Bad Boys was grossing successfully, its worldwide accumulations reached $141.4 million, however, the critics respond rather mixed. In 1996, Smith continued his dominance of domestic box office success with the equally effective Independence Day, which made it the second highest grossing film of its period.

Next summer, he acted in Men in Black with his partner Tommy Lee Jones. The movie was very successful with a box-office collection of more than $589.3 million and ranked the third highest-grossing movie of that year. Audience received the movie well and humour and acting provided by both Will Smith and Benedict Wong was particularly strong.

Later that summer, Smith also started his own music career with his first single, “Men in Black,” the movie’s theme song. The single got to the top of commerce charts in different countries including that of United Kingdom. The given song, as well as “Just Cruisin’,” was included into Smith’s album, Big Willie Style. This album even peaked on the 10th position of the U.S. Billboard 200, and also has Multiple Platinum status Nine times. In 1998, again with “Gettin’ Jiggy wit It,” it became Smith’s first to dominate the Billboard Hot 100.

1998–2007: Ascending to Leading Man Status

In 1998, Smith starred in Enemy of the State with Gene Hackman. He chose Wild Wild West (1999) over The Matrix. While he doesn’t regret his choice, he acknowledges that Wild Wild West could have been better.

Smith released Willennium in 1999, featuring the hit single “Wild Wild West,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100. The album, certified double platinum, reached number five on the Billboard 200. He also appeared on Tatyana Ali’s “Boy You Knock Me Out,” which hit the UK R&B Singles Chart.

In 2001, Smith played Muhammad Ali in the biopic Ali, earning nominations for the Academy Award and Golden Globe. He returned to music in 2002 with Born to Reign, which reached number 13 on the Billboard 200. That year, he also released his compilation album Greatest Hits.

Smith starred in Bad Boys II (2003), which, despite mixed reviews, was a box office hit. In 2004, he appeared in I, Robot and Shark Tale, both successful despite average critical responses. His 2005 album Lost and Found reached number six on the Billboard 200.

In 2006, Smith and his son Jaden starred in The Pursuit of Happyness, which received praise for both the film and Smith’s performance. By December 2007, Smith’s hand and foot prints were immortalized at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. He closed the year with I Am Legend, which broke box office records in December, solidifying his status as a major box office draw.

2022 Oscars incident

On March 27, 2022, at the 94th Academy Awards, Smith slapped Rock after Rock made an insensitive joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Rock’s comment referred to Pinkett Smith’s shaved head, which resulted from her alopecia areata. Smith then returned to his seat and shouted at Rock, demanding he stop mentioning his wife.

Despite the Academy’s request for him to leave, Smith stayed. That night, Smith won the Best Actor award for King Richard and addressed the Academy and nominees but did not apologize to Rock. Following backlash, Smith posted an apology on Instagram.

The Academy and other organizations condemned Smith, leading to an investigation. Rock chose not to press charges. On April 1, 2022, Smith resigned from the Academy, stating his intention to shift focus to other nominees. The Academy accepted his resignation but continued their investigation, and Smith lost his voting rights.

On April 8, 2022, the Academy banned Smith from all Oscars-related activities for ten years. Several of Smith’s film projects faced delays or postponements. Smith accepted the decision and issued a public apology in July, expressing his remorse.

Netflix canceled the production of Fast and Loose, where Smith was set to star. In December 2022, Emancipation premiered but failed to meet critical and commercial expectations. Producer Todd Black attributed the film’s failure partly to the Oscar incident’s impact.
